Kayoko Imai

The Final Curtain

Kayoko Imai is Yuriko Tajima’s younger sister and the custodian of the material traces Yuriko left behind. When she explains the sister’s troubled marriage and remembers the ruby pendant, Kayoko gives the investigation both family history and a concrete emblem of Yuriko’s private hurt.

Identity and Background

Kayoko is in her late fifties, though Matsumiya initially observes that her short, slightly plump figure and nearly unlined face could make her seem about forty. She lives in an older hybrid Western-Japanese house with a traditional tiled roof. Four years before the interview, she and her husband moved into the home where Yuriko had lived alone for several years after their parents died. Kayoko says they have kept all of her sister’s things.

The house’s history reflects Kayoko’s accommodation of family needs: she and her husband had owned another home, but gave it to their son when he married and moved into Yuriko’s house instead. The preserved belongings make the residence more than a setting for the interview; it is also where the absent sister’s life remains materially present.

What Kayoko Reveals

Speaking quietly, Kayoko describes the reason Yuriko’s marriage ended: her husband had another woman, and his attachment to that woman was serious. Kayoko distinguishes this from an affair that might have been a temporary breach; the relationship became consequential enough that Yuriko’s husband left her in the lurch. Her account supplies a family member’s concise explanation of Yuriko’s abandonment without elaborating beyond what Kayoko knows.

One remembered object sharpens the account. Asked about what Yuriko had received, Kayoko recalls a pendant set with a ruby. She says she can still picture the sickly smile on Yuriko’s face when her sister told her about it, and admits that although she would rather not think about the episode, she is unlikely to forget it. The pendant thus survives in Kayoko’s memory not simply as jewelry but as part of a painful recollection, preserved alongside Yuriko’s belongings.

Narrative Role

Kayoko’s evidence reaches the investigators through an intimate domestic conversation: Matsumiya visits her home, where they sit at a glass table in the garden-facing living room, and she speaks over coffee. The quiet surroundings contrast with the rupture she describes. Her testimony connects the present inquiry to the family history behind Yuriko’s life, while her vivid recollection of the ruby pendant gives that history an enduring, personal detail.
